Loading the Route

The map is open. The engine is running. You have seven days, a full tank, and a coastline that does not care about your schedule.

This is not a travel itinerary. This is a route file — a sequence of stages, objectives, and optional detours across the northern edge of Spain. You start at the Atlantic. You drive east. You collect what you find along the way.

Welcome to the Northern Spain Sidequest.

Select Your Starting Location

A Coruña. Galicia. Atlantic coast.

This is your spawn point. A granite city on a peninsula, flanked by ocean on three sides, anchored by a lighthouse that the Romans built and nobody ever turned off. It is a good place to begin. It has the right energy — salt air, fishing boats, strong coffee, and the feeling that the world gets wilder the further you go.

From here the route runs east. Seven days. Four regions. One coastline that keeps changing shape.

Game Structure

The route is divided into seven day-stages. Each one has:

  • A base — your overnight anchor, where you sleep and reset

  • Main objectives — the locations that define the day, worth pursuing regardless of weather, mood, or parking logistics

  • Sidequests — detours that do not appear on tourist maps, roads that look like mistakes, places that reward the traveler who slows down and turns left

  • Intel — timing notes, tidal warnings, access conditions, and the occasional honest flag about crowds or conditions

Complete all objectives and you finish the route. Chase the sidequests and you actually experience it.

Know Before You Play

The roads here are not highways. They are cliff edges, forest passes, single-lane village streets, and coastal paths that switch from tarmac to gravel without warning. This is not a flaw in the route. It is the route.

Weather in northern Spain is not a background setting. It is a character. It will be clear and golden in the morning, grey and dramatic by noon, and inexplicably perfect again at sunset. Do not fight it. Adjust your order of stops, pull over when the light is good, and accept that a bit of fog on a lighthouse cliff is not a worse version of the experience — it is a different one, and often better.

Seven days is enough to run the full route if you move with intention. It is also enough to lose an afternoon somewhere beautiful and still finish strong. Build in the possibility of both.

Objectives vs Sidequests

Main objectives are load-bearing. They are why you drove here. Even on a difficult day — late start, wrong turn, unexpected rain — they deliver.

Sidequests are different. They are the version of this trip that nobody else is having. A beach at the end of a dirt road. A lighthouse with no visitor center. A fishing village so small it does not have a cafe. You will not regret the ones you take. You will occasionally regret the ones you skipped.

The Map Layer

Every location in this guide is pinned. Open the map before you leave each base. Save it offline. The Galician coast and the Asturian interior have gaps in mobile signal that are inconvenient if you are navigating in real time and amusing in retrospect.

The map does not replace the guide. The guide does not replace the map. Run both.

A Word About Santiago

You will see signs for Santiago de Compostela. The whole region points toward it like a compass. It is one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in the world — the endpoint of the Camino de Santiago, a route walked by hundreds of thousands of people every year. That is its own epic. A different save file entirely.

This guide does not go to Santiago. It goes to the coast, the cliffs, the lighthouses, and the places the pilgrims do not stop to look at. That is precisely why it exists.

Begin

Day 1 is loaded. A Coruña is waiting.

Your objective is simple: arrive, orient, and feel the weight of two thousand years of Atlantic history standing on a cliff above the ocean.

Everything else starts tomorrow.
