THE GATEWAY TO THE NORTHERN ALPS
Kamikochi is a stunning mountain valley located in the heart of the Northern Japanese Alps, known for its crystal clear streams, towering peaks, and colourful autumn foliage. It is without a doubt, my favourite place in Japan! It can be a little confusing to navigate a trip here so here are my tips
GETTING THERE
Cars are not allowed in Kamikochi so you will need to catch a bus there. The nearest major city is Matsumoto.
BEST SEASON TO VISIT
Due to the high elevation (1500m), the seasons in Kamikochi change at a different time to the rest of Japan. As a rule of thumb, Kamikochi is typically 10°C to 15°C lower than Tokyo on any given day. It is closed forWinter (Nov 17-Apr 15)
Spring: Opening date (April 15th) until May
Daytime temperatures are between 0°C and 10°C and considerable snow will remain on the mountains. Flowers will start to bloom in the valley and animals will begin to appear again
Summer: May to mid-August
Daytime temperatures rise to 14-17°C. Rainy season begins June through to
mid-July meaning there are less people but potential unfavourable weather. The landscape is lush and colourful at this time.
Autumn: Late-august to the closing date (Nov 17th)
Temperatures drop quickly from 10- 17°C until October down to 0-10°C in November. Leaves start to change in the valley from October through to early November. High elevation hikes may be inaccessible due to snow.
The "best season" will depend on your activities. If you’re a serious hiker then summer-autumn (July-October) will be your best season. August-September would be my personal recommendation as you’ll have a higher chance of clear skies, and comfortable temperatures.

From Kappabashi bridge to the pond it will take you around 1 to 1.5 hours on mostly flat terrain. Alternatively you could get off the bus at the Taisho Pond station and walk to the bridge from there. The pond itself lends you an outrageously beautiful view of the snow capped peaks, perfectly reflected in the still waters.
