What you’ll do

Madeira is a waterfall paradise – from roadside cascades you can visit in flip-flops to hidden jungle hikes where you won’t see another soul. After 5 years of exploring every corner of the island, here’s my curated list: the most beautiful waterfalls, ranked from easiest access to full-day adventures. Some are famous, others you’ll only find here.

When I first moved to Madeira, I thought I’d seen every waterfall within a month. Five years later, I’m still finding new ones – hidden in gorges, tumbling into the ocean, or sitting quietly by a levada with nobody around. This itinerary is my ultimate list: the spots I keep taking friends, hikers, and even locals who say, ‘I didn’t know this existed!’

We start with the classics: Cascata dos Anjos – the car-wash waterfall where you literally drive through the flow – and Véu da Noiva, the ‘Bride’s Veil’ plunging straight into the Atlantic. These are quick stops, perfect when you’re cruising the north coast.

For those ready to hike, Madeira’s legendary levadas lead to some of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. PR6 25 Fontes & Levada do Risco is the big one – busy, yes, but worth it for two epic falls in one hike. My tip? Do Alecrim instead or go early. PR17 Pináculo e Folhadal is for those chasing untouched forest and tunnels, while PR9 Caldeirão Verde is pure Jurassic Park vibes, ending in a 100-meter cascade in a natural amphitheater.

Hidden gems? Poço das Pulgas in Boaventura – emerald pools no tour bus ever reaches. Cascata da Aguage and Água d’Alto near Santana – tiny walks, big rewards. And if you want coastal drama, detour to Rocha do Navio: a cliff cable car, remote ocean pools, and the sound of waves crashing as you picnic by the water.

This route mixes easy viewpoints, quick 15-minute walks, and all-day adventures. Pair it with a north coast road trip (Seixal Beach, Porto Moniz pools, Quinta do Furão viewpoint) and you’ve got the ultimate Madeira nature day (or three!). Bring proper shoes, a rain jacket, and curiosity – Madeira will do the rest.
