What you’ll do

Welcome to Bariloche, the heart of Argentina's Lake District!

I've designed this itinerary to help you navigate the seemingly endless things to do in this area. It does not need to be followed to the letter (unless you want to). As you go through each day's description it will help you get a grasp on what is possible to format your own perfect Bariloche holiday.

There is one day of activities downtown, another on the Circuito Chico, a day dedicated to lake excursions, and days dedicated to hikes and scenic drives/day trips.

You do not need to follow this itinerary in any particular order but I do recommend exploring the Circuito Chico on the first full day in case you want to re-visit a certain area or hike later on in your stay.

Some things are optional, of course, most notably hiking.

And while this itinerary takes up 4-5 days that does not mean I'm saying that's all Bariloche requires. There is always more to do and see. Don't discount spending an entire afternoon relaxing on a beautiful beach like Playa Sin Viento or the beaches of Villa Tacul. Not every moment needs to be planned to the minute. Allow some time for rest.

Bariloche - Downtown

Bariloche's city center isn't my favorite, I'll admit it. In recent years Bariloche has grown into quite a bit city and is no longer the charming small mountain village you may be hoping for.

But there is a lot of history in this region. Going on a walking tour is a really good idea if you have the time and those tours are downtown. The city's iconic chocolate shops here are also always a must-visit, chocoholic or not. So at some point you will be in the city center and this is how I would spend an afternoon there.

Lunch: I start the day off with lunch at La Fonda del Tio, arrive before the restaurant opens and get in line for a table. If you have time in the morning, relax on one of the beaches in Lago Nahuel Huapi, like Playa Bonita, with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

Just behind Centro Civico you'll see a couple artisan markets. One outdoor and an indoor market (la Feria Artesanal Municipal de Bariloche).

Have a stroll through the markets and then walk down Mitre St. to sample all of the chocolate shops.

Mamuschka and Rapa Nui are the icons and I have marked them below, but you will see countless chocolaterias here as you walk Bariloche's main commercial street.
