The hike to Lake Aloha offers some of the most stunning scenery in Tahoe's Desolation Wilderness. The trail features varied terrain, including a few rocky sections and several moderate climbs. Along the way, you’ll pass dramatic peaks, colorful wildflower meadows, a prime viewpoint overlooking Echo Lakes, and several other alpine lakes. Once you reach Lake Aloha, you’ll be greeted by crystal-clear water—perfect for a refreshing swim after a long hike.

The round trip is about 12.5 miles, starting at the Echo Lakes Trailhead. To make the hike a bit easier, you can take a (seasonal) boat taxi from Echo Lake, which cuts off a few miles. The ride is scenic and well worth it! More info on the boat taxi can be found here: https://www.echochalet.com

For day hikes, you’ll need to pick up a free day-use permit at the Echo Lakes Trailhead. If you’re planning to backpack, make sure to reserve a wilderness permit in advance.
