For us Winnats Pass is one of the most iconic places in the Peak District. It is basically a limestone gorge with steep sides and a scenic road snaking through its floor, making it a pretty cool place to drive through but also to hike along the top of.
Now in the spirit of honesty, when we went it was just a bit too busy, with an overflowing car park that made us feel it wasn't the best time to be there. If you're able to get there early in the morning to beat the crowds or out of season, the experience would be pretty cool. That said, despite the crowds we still found it to be a worth while.
Once there you have the option to simply drive through, or park up for a small fee and hike along the top of the pass and be treated to genuinely spectacular views. There are several route options if you fancy a hike - we have included a 7.4km circular in the link below.
The nearby village of Castleton has a pay and display and also lots of great places to stop for food and drink.
Pro Tip: If you're into photography, get yourself up the top at sunrise and shoot back over the pass.
