The hike to this cute alpine hut is very challenging involving river crossings, route finding and long distances.

Located in Arthur's Pass National Park in the Canterbury region, Barker Hut is a standard 10-bunk hut is managed by the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The track to get here follows the route to Carrington Hut and from there continues up the valley along the White River to Barker Hut. The section after Carrington Hut is sporadically marked with poles but they are very easy to miss, so route finding skills are essential.

If you're experienced, fit and after a good challenge, you will love this hike.

Extra info:

  • Walking distance: Approx 24km one way

  • Walking time: 8-10hrs one way

  • Elevation gain:

  • Hut fees: $10NZD for non-alpine club members

  • River crossing and route finding skills essential - remember to bring your Personal Locator Beacon for safety.
