A black sand beach with a stunning coastline, this spot is popular with photographers at golden hour.
Usually less busy than nearby Muriwai beach, Maukatia bay is a great spot for a picnic, scenic photos or just a walk along the coastline. Because the waves can be quite rough and it's not patrolled by lifeguards, it's not recommended for swimming unless you're very confident in the water.

Extra info:

  • Walk time: Approx 5 minutes walk from carpark

  • Note: the walk from the carpark takes you downhill so be prepared for a climb back up
