The Gastlosen are a striking mountain chain located near Jaun (Bellegarde), on the border between the cantons of Fribourg and Bern. Their dramatic limestone peaks are often called the “Swiss Dolomites” sharp, rugged, and full of alpine character. The area offers one of the most scenic circular hikes in Switzerland, known as the Gastlosen Tour, which loops around the entire range and rewards you with stunning views of both the Bernese Alps and the Gruyère region.

Starting from Jaunpass or Musersbergli, the trail takes you through meadows, pine forests, and open ridgelines. Along the way, you might spot ibexes or chamois, and the changing light makes the white cliffs glow beautifully throughout the day.

My personal tip: Visit in early autumn when the larches turn golden and the air is crystal clear. The soft evening light on the rock faces is incredible for photography. If you’re lucky, you might even witness paragliders soaring in front of the peaks, a perfect alpine scene.
