Brienzer Rothorn towers above Lake Brienz, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Alps and the turquoise lake below. Visitors can hike up on trails suitable for various skill levels or take the historic cogwheel train to the summit during the summer, making it accessible even for those who prefer a more leisurely approach.

For adventure seekers, it’s possible to continue along the Brienzergrat ridge, a spectacular high-altitude hike with incredible views. Note: this route requires good footing and sure-footedness, as parts of the trail are exposed.

In summer, the alpine meadows along the trail are full of blooming wildflowers, perfect for photography. During winter, the area is mostly snow-covered and quiet, ideal for winter photography or snowshoe enthusiasts, though the cogwheel train is not in operation.

Overnight stay: At the summit, the Rothorn Kulm hotel offers rooms and dormitories, ideal if you want to capture sunrise or sunset over the Alps.

My personal tip: Start early in the morning, either by train or on foot, to enjoy the soft morning light over the lake and surrounding peaks. Staying overnight gives you almost exclusive access to the golden hour at sunrise and sunset. If you attempt the Brienzergrat, be fully prepared, it’s challenging but offers an unforgettable panorama.
