What you’ll do

Spend three weeks discovering the rugged soul of South Africa’s north-western frontier. Fly into Cape Town International Airport (CPT) and pick up your rental car for a journey that transitions from the cold Atlantic surf to the ancient cedar forests and the red dunes of the Kalahari. This itinerary is designed for the true explorer—expect vast desert silences, gravel passes, and some of the most remote landscapes in Southern Africa.

  • Total Driving Distance: ~2,750 km (1,710 miles)

  • Route: Cape Town → Langebaan & Paternoster → Tulbagh → Cederberg Wilderness Area → Clanwilliam → Lamberts Bay & Vredendal → Riemvasmaak → Augrabies Falls → Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park → Calvinia → R355 (Tankwa Karoo) → Stellenbosch & Franschhoek → Cape Town Airport

  • Best Time to Go: The autumn shoulder season (April to May) offers the most comfortable temperatures for the desert regions, avoiding the scorching 40°C+ summer heat. Alternatively, August to September is perfect for those wanting to see the Cederberg and West Coast carpeted in spring wildflowers.
