What you’ll do

This itinerary is a refreshing twist on the classic South Island loop, taking you through quieter towns, coastal gems, and landscapes most travellers completely overlook. Starting in Queenstown, you’ll journey through the dramatic mountains of Fiordland to Milford Sound, then swing out to the wild coastline and heritage charm of Dunedin. From there, the route takes you north through Timaru and into Christchurch before cutting back into the Mackenzie region — Tekapo, Mount Cook, and Twizel. The loop finishes with the scenic drive through Wānaka and back to Queenstown.

It’s a beautifully balanced trip: a mix of coastlines, city comforts, rural towns, alpine roads, star-filled skies, and those “middle of nowhere” moments that make the South Island feel so special. Ideal for travellers wanting a less-travelled route that still captures the magic of Aotearoa.
